EDF Fascism

Pay attention to this as this is what we have been telling everyone we are up against. On this link on the left side near the top you will read about 60 fishermen, 23 Environmental Defense Fund(EDF) staff, and 89 meetings. This is 1 EDF staff person for 3 fishermen.

There is no limit of money that edf will spend to take you off the water and destroy your lively hood, your communities, and a way of life we have all enjoyed. After seeing this, there cannot be any doubt of how EDF is working against you. Apparently they will spend their last donated foundation dollar to put you out of business.
For those of you in the Gulf, some of these 60 fishermen were from your area
of Destin, Orange Beach, and other Gulf locations.

  2. Folks, Please fax to let them know how fishermen REALLY feel about Catch Shares (keep it clean-ha ha).

NO Catch Shares, NO funding for Catch Shares & we need a Catch Share moratorium to stop recent & pending programs.

    Thanks!!

    : NOAA Catch Share Policy

I am opposed to catch shares and believe NOAA and the Dept. of Commerce should not be in the business of privatization. Fisheries management can and should be accomplished without privatization.

Catch Share programs are unconstitutional giveaways of public resources to private individuals. They are wholly unrelated to managing fishery resources. Catch Shares are being pushed as a fisheries management tool, when in reality any legitimate fisheries management measure can be implemented equally well without privatizing public resources.

Catch Shares, privatization, rationalization: it means permanently allotting the rights to catch, process, and/or sell fish to a few individuals and companies. These rights are soon consolidated to an even smaller group of individuals and companies solely for profit.

Fishing jobs become scarcer, with little or no chance for new fishermen to advance beyond deckhand. Because the rights to the fish are consolidated outside of local communities, profits pass by rather than into local economies.

For these reasons and others, I believe NOAA’s policy should be NO Catch Shares or privatization under any name. I ask for a moratorium on privatization. This should include the recent ITQ programs and the ones about to go into effect. We need to carefully study the effects of existing quota programs on coastal economies.
